AIADMK may give MDMK 4 seats

Special Correspondent

MDMK has asked for a minimum of five seats; Vaiko says talks will continue

CPI(M) not to compromise on Tirupur seat

Manithaneya Makkal Katchi insisting on two seats

CHENNAI: Talks between the AIADMK and the MDMK, which were locked in a stalemate on Monday, made some progress on Tuesday after senior AIADMK leaders met MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Tuesday at his residence.

The MDMK had asked for a minimum of five seats, but until Tuesday, the AIADMK refused to part with more than three.

Now, there are indications that the AIADMK might be willing to allot four seats. Senior AIADMK leaders O. Panneerselvam and D. Jayakumar assured Mr. Vaiko that they would convey his demand to their party general secretary Jayalalithaa.

Mr. Vaiko called for a meeting of senior MDMK leaders in the evening and apprised them of the progress in talks. He later told reporters that the talks would continue.

Meanwhile, the state secretariat committee of the CPI(M), which discussed the developments since the party leaders met Ms. Jayalalithaa on Monday, resolved not to make any compromise on the Tirupur constituency. The secretariat’s decision was conveyed to the AIADMK leadership.

“We have not completely slammed the door. We hope that the issue can be resolved and we are expecting a call from the AIADMK leadership,” said a senior leader.

Upset with offer

In another development, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), upset with the offer of a single seat by the DMK, opened up other channels of communication. The party is insisting that the DMK allot two Lok Sabha seats.

“We will announce our stand on Wednesday,” said M.H. Jawahirullah, coordinator of the party.
