Illegal compound walls cleared in Karwar

Karwar: The Karwar City Municipal Council authorities demolished compound walls and other structures built on encroached area in Kajubag here on Wednesday.

The Kajubag-Sunkeri cement road construction and road widening works is going on at a slow pace. Earlier, angered by this, the people living in Nandanagadda and Sukeri areas had voluntarily given land for road widening.

But at Kajubag some people failed to give up encroached land and the areas earmarked for road widening, although they were given notice by the municipal council two years ago. The municipal council had left out these areas and constructed the road. The five-kilometre road is being widened for the last two years. People, led by office-bearers of different social organisations, met the officials of Karnataka Urban Development Corporation, which has taken up road construction, and objected to their casual attitude.

Residents of Kajubag area opposed demolition saying that they be given time. The municipal officials refused to provide time saying that notice was issued two years ago. Though the residents pleaded that they would remove the encroachments on their own, the officials rejected the plea and cleared the encroachments.
