NEW DELHI: Concerned over the safety of prominent political leaders, particularly during the hectic campaigning for the five-phase Lok Sabha elections, the Centre has impressed upon them the need to take adequate security precautions. The “security alert” to the top leaders was sounded by Home Minister P. Chidambaram in a letter written to them last week. The Minister said they must “cooperate with the security forces engaged in security duties and share their tour programmes and movement plans with the concerned Central and State authorities well in advance.” The Home Ministry had also taken steps to alert and sensitise the State governments, which were responsible for the security of these leaders in their areas. For obvious reasons, the names of the leaders whom the Minister had alerted were not disclosed. They include, say sources, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi, BJP president Rajnath Singh, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani, BSP president Mayawati, AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa, TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, J&K Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah and his father Farooq Abdullah and Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh.
