Gunman storms immigration centre, 13 killed

NEW YORK: Thirteen people were killed on Friday in a rampage by a gunman at a civic centre in the New York State town of Binghamton, State Governor David Paterson said in a live television broadcast. “The gunman killed 12 or 13 people. This is a horrible situation.”

Later, television reports said the gunman was found dead and the surviving hostages were freed.

And local News 10 Now television said that the town police chief told them “the building is secure and everyone alive is out.”

The suspected Asian assailant, armed with a high-powered rifle, had stormed the American Civic Center, an immigration services centre, and taken dozens of people hostage.

Eye-witnesses said two persons, believed to be Asians, were taken out of the rear of the building in plastic handcuffs and led to an unmarked police car.

Some groups of people were also taken out of the building and paramedics went into the building to tend the injured.

A nearby school was put in a lockdown condition and the building evacuated as several law enforcement agencies converged on the building. Among them were expert hostage negotiators and sharp-shooters of the Swat team.

Charles Kramer, Member City Council, said it was not a terror attack. — Agencies
