DRDO typhoid kit to hit markets soon

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: A cheap and rapid typhoid test kit, a research spin off of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), would hit the markets soon once the requisite certification and clearances were obtained, A. Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Controller (R&D), DRDO, said here on Saturday.

The new kit could detect typhoid in three minutes, whereas it takes three days under conventional tests, he said during a brief interaction with media persons here. The technology transfer has already been done for the commercial production.

The work on developing the much-awaited cheaper cochlear implant, taken up by the Naval Science and Technology Laboratory, Visakhapatnam, would also be completed by December.

The cochlear implant would cost just about Rs.1 lakh against the current market price of over Rs.7 lakh.

The light weight calliper developed by the DRDO is being made even lighter by replacing a metal joint with composite material.

Mr. Sivathanu Pillai, who is also the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, BrahMos Aerospace, said the Air Force version of the BrahMos supersonic missile would be launched in 2011 and inducted by 2012.
