CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Thursday said Mansoor Alikhan, who has decided to contest as an independent in the coming elections, can apply to the authorities concerned with regard to his request seeking permission to canvas through paintings on walls and by sticking posters. Disposing of a petition by Mr. Mansoor Alikhan, Justice K.Suguna said the petitioner could apply to the authorities concerned as soon as the election symbol was allotted to him. The authorities should pass orders within two days. When there was an authority to examine his request, at this point of time the court need not go into the issue. It was for the authorities concerned to decide the issue taking into consideration various factors at the relevant point of time. In the petition, Mr.Mansoor Alikhan said unless the petitioner as an independent candidate was permitted to canvas through paintings on walls and posters, he would be put to great hardship. He submitted that in the model code of conduct for the elections, the authorities had prevented defacement of property. Hence, it was not possible for independent candidates to reach all voters. He prayed the court to direct the authorities to permit independent candidates to canvas their votes through paintings on walls and by sticking posters with their allotted symbols.
