DMK to launch campaign after announcing candidates


CHENNAI: New faces in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will be given the party ticket for the Lok Sabha elections, Chief Minister and party president M.Karunanidhi said here on Saturday.

The party interviewed 540 persons for the 21 constituencies it planned to contest. He would consult district-level office-bearers before announcing the candidates,

Mr.Karunanidhi told reporters after concluding the exercise, which began on Thursday. He said the DMK would launch its campaign after declaring the candidates.

To a question on the election manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Mr.Karunanidhi said he did not want to comment.

AIADMK interview

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Saturday interviewed aspirants for party ticket in batches at the AIADMK headquarters.

She interviewed all applicants who had filed papers for the 40 constituencies in the State and the Union Territory of Puducherry. This went on for nearly four hours.

In a chat with reporters, she said the party’s first list of candidates would be released “very soon.”

According to a party source, she exhorted her party members to strive hard for the success of the AIADMK and allies in the elections.

Sources in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam said seat-sharing discussions with the AIADMK were continuing.
