CBCID team in Pune to look for minors from State

S. Vijay Kumar

CHENNAI: A special team of the Crime Branch CID police is camping in Pune to look for minors of Tamil Nadu possibly trapped in areas dominated by transgenders.

Six transgenders were part of the gang that abducted a teenager from Kovalam in Kancheepuram district and forced him into prostitution.

After the victim’s mother came out with details of how her son was made to beg and later castrated to become a sex worker, the CBCID police arrested the six transgenders and a doctor of Andhra Pradesh who performed the sex change operation.

Additional Director General of Police (CBCID) Archana Ramasundaram said the team was coordinating with the local police to screen specific areas in Pune. “We have information that there is a camp full of transgenders there…we are trying to see if there is any victim like the one in this case. Specific instructions have been given to the team to look for similar cases,” she told The Hindu on Sunday.

Mrs. Ramasundaram said there was an urgent need to create awareness among parents.

“We want take the assistance of NGOs to sensitise parents and minors to safety aspects. The focus is on vulnerable children. On completion of investigation, we will consider suggesting to authorities concerned on the steps to be taken to mitigate the grievances of transgenders.”

Deputy Inspector General of Police (CBCID), S.N. Seshasai, said the police team had checked a locality on the outskirts of Pune on Saturday night where there were more than 500 transgenders. “About 50 of them who belong to Tamil Nadu claimed that they had migrated many years ago. There is information that another group of transgenders moved to a place some 80 km away from Pune recently which we are trying to check,” he said.
