IN PRAYER: A view of the Palm Sunday procession at the St. Mary’s Basilica in the city. — KOCHI: Thousands of Christians participated in Palm Sunday observations across the churches in the city recalling events in the New Testament that speak of the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jersusalem before he was crucified. At the St. Francis Assisi Cathedral, Archbishop Daniel Acharuparampil led the celebrations, blessing the palm leaves before the faithful set out in a procession from the Archbishop’s House to the Cathedral. The Archbishop was accompanied by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Karikkassery and the parish priest of the Cathedral Church Father John Bosco Panakkal. At the St. Mary’s Basilica, Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Chakkiath led the Palm Sunday procession to the Cathedral before the Mass. The Palm Sunday celebrations, according to accounts in the New Testament, recall the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem that set the Jewish religious hierarchy against him. The Palm Sunday ushers in the culminating week of the Lenten season during which fasting and penance are traditional Catholic practices. With Palm Sunday begins the Holy Week. On Maundy Thursday Catholics celebrate the anniversary of the institution of the Holy Eucharist. On Good Friday the Crucifixion of Jesus is recalled and his resurrection is celebrated on Easter Sunday.
