Ensure quality at food outlets

This is with reference to Lifestyle Changes: Are they for better? (The Hindu, 30-3-2009) The change in eating habits depends on the economic status of citizens and it is unavoidable for the poorer sections to patronise the roadside eateries or fast food outlets. However, health authorities in Corporation of Chennai and the Directorate of Public Health should own the responsibility of ensuring healthy and hygienic upkeep of foods or eatable items besides the quality drinking water served to the consumers, by way of surprise inspections.

By and large it is all the more important that the kitchens of eateries are maintained in hygienic conditions and cooks and waiters undergo periodical health checkups.

Stray dog menace

During the winter season, our Bhuvaneswari Nagar area used to be infested with stray dogs creating hardships to the residents, especially after sunset. But, of late, these stray canines ‘terrorise’ people even during daytime, and pose a menace to pedestrians and vehicle-users.

The first reason could be the accumulation of garbage everywhere, for the dogs to prey upon freely, since it is not cleared regularly by the municipal staff. The second one is that their movements are not controlled either by the Blue Cross or by the Animal Welfare Board or by the Pallavaram Municipality.

In the city, the Corporation takes remedial action to tackle the menace, whereas the residents in the suburbs are helpless and are ever left at the mercy of the authorities concerned, who do not bother to take action despite several appeals to them. K.V. Sivaswamy

Provide door for junction box

In south Thirumalai Nagar at Villivakkam, the junction box for underground power supply cables having No: M/10, situated on II Street is open on one side without door, posing danger to the residents. This has been brought to the notice of the authorities concerned but action is yet to be taken.

Provision of closing door on the open side is requested at the earliest to avoid fatal accidents.

Revive bus service

Thiruvotriyur is well connected with places such as Thiruvanmiyur, Tambaram and Poonamallee. But it lacks direct bus service to Ayanavaram, Villivakkam, Ambattur and Avadi.

We request the MTC authorities to reintroduce the bus service 103 (Thiruvotriyur and Avadi) via Vallalar Nagar, Ayanavaram and Ambattur.

It will be helpful for commuters going to Ambattur Industrial Estate, Ambattur Taluk Office and Central Government offices in Avadi.

Traffic signal required

We thank the State government and National Highway officials for constructing a road overbridge at the Padi junction. But considering the safety of the motorists, there is an urgent need to install traffic signal at the top of the flyover.

Vehicles coming from Ambattur going towards Anna Nagar West have to take a right turn and vehicles coming from Red Hills and proceeding towards Anna Nagar West have to cross this junction. Vehicles coming from Anna Nagar West proceeding to Red Hills have to pass this junction, leading to accidents at this flyover. To avert this risk, traffic police, and highway officials should jointly study the situation and install a traffic signal.

Metrowater response

With reference to the letter published in The Hindu dated 16-3-2009 in these columns, it is informed that the sewer obstruction at Erikarai Road in Virugambakkam was cleared on the same day, and there is no overflow of sewage at present. Since a manhole in the sewerage system leading to the sewage pumping station has sunk, surcharge condition occurs in the system resulting in sewage overflow. The rectification work of the manhole is in progress and is expected to be completed by the end of April, 2009.

Pre-paid autos

Most of the express trains proceeding to the Chennai Central Railway Station halt at the Perambur Railway Station.

It is highly regrettable that autorickshaws available inside and outside are charging exorbitant fares which cause a lot of difficulties to the passengers. To avoid this, it is suggested to introduce prepaid fares as in Central/ Egmore railway stations.

The overbridge available at Vysarpadi Jeeva Railway Station does not have proper lighting facilities during night. In view of this, the passengers are forced to cross the track. I request the authorities concerned to take immediate steps.
