Trial runs on at power plant
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: The 500-MW capacity new power plant constructed as an extension of the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station has been on trial runs for the past few days, while the restricted demand for electricity in the State touched 212 million units again on Saturday.
The synchronisation of the plant, which was originally planned on March 28, is being postponed every day as the equipment is developing teething troubles during trial runs.
The new plant is expected to offer relief to the grid by generating 6 million units initially and 12 million units when fully stabilised.
Three units trip
Meanwhile, the grid suffered another setback on Sunday when power generation fell by 5.5 mu following tripping of a 250-MW capacity unit at Kothagudem Thermal Power Station and another two units at Vijayawada Thermal Power Station, each of 210 MW capacity, due to some technical snags. A capacity of 112 MW is already under shutdown at the Lanco power station at Kondapalli. A grid operation official said the demand of 212 mu could be met as heavy purchases were made from external sources.
