KATHMANDU: Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood and Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) on Sunday discussed border security during the parliamentary election of India and Nepal’s by-elections. “The border security will be tightened during those periods,” Prime Minister’s press adviser Om Sharma told The Hindu. Mr. Sharma said Mr. Prachanda also asked Mr. Sood about the updates of the elections. According to the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, people of Nepal and India can travel the countries through their open borders. But in the recent days as the rate of crimes have increased on the both sides, security has been a major issue for both the countries. When Mr. Prachanda visited India last September, he held discussions with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh regarding its revision. As per the Joint Statement released after his visit, “the two Prime Ministers agreed to review, adjust, and update the treaty.” Meanwhile, Mr. Prachanda also met Chinese Ambassador Quo Guohang on Sunday. Mr. Sharma said discussions revolved around on making Mr. Prachanda’s second visit to China (he had first visited the country during Beijing Olympics) fruitful. The Prime Minister would be leaving for China in the last week of April, Mr. Sharma told The Hindu during which Mr. Prachanda would be meeting China’s President and Prime Minister. China had provided a financial aid of $14.8 million to Nepal during the Chinese Foreign Minister’s visit.
