NEW DELHI: An elderly woman was rescued from drowning in the Agra canal in South-East Delhi by some police personnel in the early hours of Saturday. Inspector R.C. Jain and his subordinates were going from the Jaitpur police station towards Badarpur via the Agra Canal Road when they heard a woman screaming for help. Using search lights, they spotted an elderly woman being swept away by the strong currents of the river. The team flashed the message to the Police Control Room seeking assistance for rescuing the woman. A PCR team and several local policemen rushed to the spot and rescued the woman, identified as Savitri, a resident of Madanpur Khadar. She has been admitted to the trauma centre of the AIIMS. The police found that Savitri was mentally challenged. Around 2 a.m. on Saturday, she went missing from her house and somehow fell into the canal. “She is undergoing psychiatric treatment at AIIMS,” said a police officer, adding that the policemen involved in the rescue operation were being rewarded.
