CHENNAI: The Padmavathi Ammaiyar Charitable and Educational Trust was inaugurated here on Sunday, at ‘Isai Sangamam’, organised in connection with the birthday celebration of Mu. Ka. Mu. Arivunidhi, grandson of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Tricycles, sewing machines and bicycles were distributed to persons with disability, women and students on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Arivunidhi said his late grandmother Padmavathi Ammaiyar was an embodiment of sacrifice. “During a financial crisis facing ‘Murasoli’, she offered the gold in her thaali.” he said.

Poet Vairamuthu, said Tamil and music were in Dr. Arivunidhi’s blood.

“Though he is a practising doctor, he is passionate about the arts.” Commending him for the various social initiatives he has taken up, Mr.Vairamuthu said the older generation knew a lot about Padmavathi Ammaiyar.

“Even the Chief Minister has written about his first wife, in a rather poignant manner, recalling the day she passed away.” Mr. Karunanidhi was away in Pudukkottai, addressing a public meeting, at the time of her death.

“On his return, he was so shocked at this unbearable loss, he writes,” Mr. Vairamuthu added.

Singers T.M. Soundararajan and M.Balamuralikrishna, and composers M.S.Viswanathan-T.K.Ramamurthy commended Dr.Arivunidhi’s initiative.

Earlier, a lively light music troupe performed hits from films of yesteryears as well as some recent numbers, featuring some noted playback singers. Dr.Arivunidhi also performed on the occasion.
