Apollo conducts PDA surgeries on 3 girls
Staff Reporter
PDA causes problems like chest infection, difficulty in breathing
Kakinada: The Apollo Hospitals successfully performed `Patent Ductus Arteriosus’ (PDA) surgeries on three girls whose lives were at risk, a few days ago. Treatment of this condition is normally done by cutting open the chest whereas PDA involves the implanting of a mesh-like device through a blood vessel in the thigh using a catheter.
PDA is a condition of the heart wherein the blood vessel that carries blood from the pulmonary artery to aorta remains open, resulting in excessive flow of blood into the lungs and the consequent overloading. PDA causes problems like chest infection, difficulty in breathing and damage to the pulmonary arteries, which are associated with risk to life and disability.
Apollo Hospitals consultant cardiologist Dr. G Mahesh told media persons that a baby’s lungs were not needed for oxygen supply while it was still in the womb because the baby receives oxygen through the mother’s lungs and placenta. Since a baby’s lungs do not provide any oxygen, there would be no need for energy to be expended for pumping blood to lungs.
The ductus arteriosus is a blood vessel present in all babies while still in the womb, which allows blood to flow from the pulmonary artery to aorta. When the baby is born and the umbilical cord is cut, the lungs need to supply oxygen. The lungs expand, blood vessels relax to accept more flow and the ductus arteriosus usually closes within the first few hours of life. The ductus arteriosus sometimes fails to close, which is known as PDA.
The PDA surgeries were done on Vijaya, Visalakshmi and Papa aged 8, 4 and 1 respectively by a team comprising doctors Mahesh and Hemant Behara (both interventional cardiologists) and R.D. Naik and H.D. Shenoy (surgeons and anesthesiologists).
