PR candidate asked to prove nationality

Staff Reporter

Kakinada: District Collector and Kakinada Parliamentary constituency returning officer Gopalakrishna Dwivedi has called for proof of the nationality of Praja Rajyam candidate Chalamalasetty Sunil Kumar by 11 a.m of April 7 following complaints of Congress, TDP and BJP that the latter was a British citizen. Mr. Kumar is also accused of stating his year of birth as 1967 to British companies in which he worked as a director and 1970 to some other firms where he held similar positions before 2007-08.

‘No evidence’

Addressing mediapersons at the District Congress Committee office here, Congress party manifesto committee member and High Court advocate Ravi Sankar Jandhyala said that Mr. Sunil could not produce a single evidence of his domiciliary status as he was apparently not a permanent citizen of India nor did he fulfill other conditions thereof.

He had also used different passports whenever he travelled between India and Britain.

Mr. Kumar is now required to prove that he is an Indian citizen, not a British citizen and an overseas citizen of India, failing which his nomination will be summarily rejected by the Collector who is also the District Election Officer.

Mr. Kumar could have become an Indian citizen if he had surrendered his British citizenship and stayed in India for not less than five consecutive years.

PCC secretary P Nanaji said Mr. Kumar himself stated in the affidavit that he did not file income tax returns up to the financial year 2007-08 because he was not an ordinary resident of India, hence he was under no compulsion to comply with the IT laws here.

Besides, Mr. Kumar’s wife was a German lady. All these point out that Mr. Kumar has tried to misled the Election Commission by giving false undertakings, which necessitate rejection of his candidature, he said.
