Financing health

The editorial “Financing health (April 6)” should serve as an eye-opener to both the Congress and the BJP, which are duping the electorate by promising vote-catching sops such as supply of cheap rice and wheat to the BPL (below the poverty line) families. It makes one wonder whether the aam-admi should vote for these parties. Is it not the responsibility of the government to care about primary health and primary education? It is a pity that no mainstream political party has addressed the healthcare and educational needs of the aam-admi.

Syed Sultan Mohiddin,

Kadapa

The actual amount spent on health care by the state is woefully inadequate. Health and medical facilities are crucial factors for survival and are directly related to the Human Development Index. In fact, many underdeveloped countries have better health care systems. In India, despite its growth, women depend on primary health centres — most of which lack proper facilities — for child birth.

Epidemic outbreak will pose a big challenge in the coming days. Would it not be worthwhile if the money squandered on elections and other extravaganza is diverted to health research programmes?

P.R. Rajeswari,

Dubai
