dated April 7, 1959: Canal waters

The Minister for Irrigation and Power Mr. Hafiz Mohammad Ibrahim announced in the Lok Sabha on April 6 that an ad hoc transitional agreement has been reached between India and Pakistan for the continued supply of water from the eastern rivers. The agreement is for one year ending March 31, 1960. India continued to supply water to Pakistan in accordance with the agreement reached between the two countries in May 1948. There have been transitional arrangements on three occasions in 1955, 1956 and 1957. There was, however, no such formal agreement for two years, 1957 to 1959. But India continued to supply water in accordance with the original agreement of 1948 and the principles proposed by the World Bank. The official announcement said that while the draft agreement now concluded followed broadly the lines of agreement for 1956, India stood to get “a somewhat larger proportion of the waters hitherto supplied to Pakistan.”
