KHAMMAM: Anil Kumar, evangelist and son-in-law of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who was booked for violation of the Election Commission’s model code of conduct in Khammam, surrendered before Superintendent of Police Mahesh M. Bhagwat on Monday. Freed on bailHe was later released on bail on his executing a personal bond in the Khammam (Rural) police station. A criminal case was booked against him under 171(electoral offence) and 188 (disobedience to an order promulgated by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code for canvassing for votes for the Congress at a religious meeting on the premises of a church on the outskirts of Khammam on March 24. Brochures on government-sponsored welfare measures were also distributed at the meeting without acknowledging the name of the printer. Some of participants at the meeting were allegedly paid bus fare. Three others, who were also involved in the episode, were arrested immediately as they were locally available. Collector’s assuranceAs no immediate action was taken against Anil Kumar, the issue was raised by the Opposition parties on different fora. Collector V. Usha Rani assured them of action as per law after duly investigating the case.
