N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu, greets Rangarajan Mahalakshmi K., Vice-Chancellor, Vel Tech Dr. RR and Dr. SR Technical University, at The Hindu office in Chennai on Monday. CHENNAI: Vel Tech Dr. RR and Dr. SR Technical University, in collaboration with The Hindu, has launched an All-India Merit Scholarship under the Mahatma Gandhi National Merit Scholarships scheme to offer a 50 per cent tuition waiver for 25 deserving B.E. or B.Tech students this year. The total value of the scholarship is Rs. 50 lakh. Students from across India who have scored a minimum of 85 per cent in aggregate in their Class 12 examinations in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology will be eligible to participate in the scheme. All candidates must write the VelTech All-India Engineering Entrance Examination on May 10. The last date for application is April 30. All eligible students who have not been selected for any other scholarships by the university or the government will be listed branch-wise in the descending order of their marks using a normalisation process. All other things being equal, the most deserving candidate in terms of economic conditions will be selected, with female candidates receiving preference. Each selected student will receive a scholarship amount of Rs. 2 lakh, which is equivalent to half the tuition fee over four years. “This is a well-conceived merit-cum-means initiative introduced by the Vel Tech University,” said N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu. “The idea is to promote excellence while broadening social access to higher education. The Hindu values education as one of its top editorial priorities and is happy to partner in this scheme.” “The theme behind these scholarship schemes is that though technical education is available on a large scale in our country, it is yet to reach the deserving students,” said the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Rangarajan Mahalakshmi K. “Technical education is yet to become accessible. Technology is the key to a safe and secure India and so technical education is a key ingredient for a prosperous India.”
