The Vazhividu Murugan Temple, one of the important temples in Ramanthapuram town, is all set to celebrate Panguni Uthiram festival on Wednesday. This day assumes significance because of the star Uthiram and Pournami occurring together. Besides, according to belief, it is on Panguni Uthiram that the marriage of Parvati and Parameshwara and Muruga and Deivanai take place. ‘Kavadi’On this day, all places, where Lord Subramanya or Muruga temple is located, the devotees carry ‘Pal kavadi, Panneer kavadi, Pushpa kavadi’ and others. As far as Vazhividu Murugan Temple is concerned, hundreds of devotees would throng Ramanathapuram on Panguni Uthiram day and fulfill “nerthikadan” such as Pal Kudam, Panneer Kudam and others. Some people would reach the temple after piercing ‘vel’ into their body. Procession takenThough the festival falls during hot summer, the devotees without minding the heat and humidity would take out a long procession before reaching the temple. Special arrangements have been made at the temple for smooth conduct of the festival. People have put up ‘Thanner Pandal’ all along the roads for the benefit of devotees carrying ‘kavadi.’ The police have put up barricades to regulate the crowd. Closed circuit televisions have been installed at strategic points to monitor the developments. Traffic diversionThe police have also prepared a traffic diversion plan in the town. C. Jaishankar
