Amar Singh-Azam Khan rift flares up

Atiq Khan

LUCKNOW: Differences within the Samajwadi Party flared up on Tuesday, when its national general secretary Amar Singh threatened to quit over the issue of Mohammad Azam Khan, with whom he is involved in a running feud.

Agar Azam Khan ke maamle mein zaroorat padi to salaam karoonga aur chala jaoonga (If there is need to quit the party over the Azam Khan issue, I will not hesitate for a moment), Mr. Singh said at a seminar organised by the Student Islamic Federation of India here.

Mr. Singh was referring to the Kalyan Singh factor that led to MPs Shafiqur Rehman Barq and Salim Sherwani quitting the SP and Mr. Khan coming out against party president, Mulayam Singh’s alliance with the former BJP leader. Mr. Amar Singh made his disenchantment known when he said that while he had been asked to keep mum, Mr. Khan, who was the general secretaryand senior leader, was saying many things about him and the SP candidate from Rampur, Jayaprada.

The rift between Mr. Khan and Mr. Amar Singh first surfaced in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls during which Ms. Jayaprada was made the SP candidate from Rampur, Mr. Khan’s hometown. She won the polls. When she was re-nominated now, reportedly at the behest of Mr. Singh, Mr. Khan vehemently opposed it .

When Mr. Mulayam Singh struck an alliance with Mr. Kalyan Singh, it was Mr. Khan who was the first Muslim SP leader to condemn his leader’s decision. Mr. Khan reportedly accused Mr. Amar Singh of playing a major role in the Mulayam-Kalyan alliance. A stage came when Ms. Jayaprada offered to leave the contest if Mr. Khan was given ticket from Rampur.

Matters came to a head when some persons, alleged to be Mr. Khan’s supporters, attacked her convoy in Rampur on Tuesday.
