Dissidence haunts parties in Uttara Kannada

Correspondent

Karwar: Dissidence is haunting all the major parties in Uttar Kannada Lok Sabha constituency.

While the Bharatiya Janata Party is divided into Ananthkumar Hegde camp and the former Minister Shivanand Naik’s camp, the party is trying hard to patch up the differences between the two leaders. Mr. Hegde’s supporters claim that the dissatisfaction among some leaders and workers of the party would not affect the electoral fortune of the BJP candidate. Shivanand Naik, who hails from majority Idiga community, has considerable clout in the district. He was allegedly defeated by Mr. Hegde and his supporters during last Assembly election. Now his supporters are baying for the blood of the opponents.

Congress candidate Margaret Alva is facing opposition from Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president R.V. Deshapande’s supporters. Mr. Deshapande’s son Prashant, who was the aspirant for the party ticket, was outwitted by Alva in the last moment. Ms. Alva’s supporters placed an advertisement in a local paper without Mr. Deshapande’s photo, though it has the photos of the other local and state leaders. Now almost all the Deshapande supporters are conspicuous by their absence in Ms. Alva’s election meetings.
