SALEM: Tamil Nadu Consumer and Human Rights Vigilance Council in association with the National Service Scheme of Periyar University conducted a consumer awareness programme at Kottagoundampatti Government school recently. Speaking at the programme, Council Chairman S. Selvam called upon the students to educate people, particularly those living in the rural areas, on consumer rights. Unfair practicesThey should encourage the people to join hands to fight unfair trade practices. The Central and State governments have enacted various laws to protect the interests of the consumers. Students should educate people about these laws. Mr. Selvam said the increase in the level of awareness among consumers would help in checking unfair trade practices. He also spoke on the Right to Information Act. Other speakersUniversity NSS Co-ordinator T. Periyasamy presided. NSS Programme Officer R. Subramaniya Bharathi, School Headmistress Chitra spoke.
