Repalle poll as per schedule

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Chief Electoral Officer I.V. Subba Rao on Wednesday clarified that the election in Repalle Assembly constituency would not be countermanded in view of the death of the Lok Satta candidate Satyanarayana Chowdhary who died of a heart attack.

Dr. Subba Rao told reporters here that Lok Satta was not a State recognised party and as such, the elections would be held as per original schedule in this constituency also. The name of the Lok Satta candidate would, however, be removed from the ballot paper.

On the nominations for the second phase, he said after the deadline for withdrawing nominations came to a close at 3 pm, a total of 2,077 candidates remained in the race in 20 Lok Sabha and 140 Assembly constituencies spread over 10 districts in South Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. Mr. Subba Rao said the inability of the Election Commission to stop campaigning on TV channels 48 hours before the commence of the polling for Phase I was a tricky issue as parties and candidates would have to campaign for Phase II.
