NTPC profit up

To generate an additional 3300 MW in the current year.

NEW DELHI: The net profit of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) grew by 5.56 per cent to Rs. 7,827.40 crore for the fiscal ended March 2009, after setting aside Rs. 1,400 crore to be paid to employees for wage revision in 2008-09.

Provision

“NTPC’s profit after tax for 2008-09 is Rs. 7,827.4 crore against Rs. 7,414.80 crore in the previous fiscal. We made a provision of Rs. 1,400 crore for the wage revision announced recently otherwise our profit after tax would have crossed the Rs. 8,000-crore-mark,” Chairman and Managing Director R. S. Sharma told reporters at the annual press briefing here on Wednesday. NTPC contributed 29 per cent of the total electricity generated at 206.94 billion units during 2008-09.

Mr. Sharma said the company had outlined borrowings of about Rs. 11,330 crore and had planned capital expenditure of Rs. 17,700 crore during 2009-10 for enhancing its capacity by 3,300 MW. It has already got new loans aggregating Rs. 11,575 crore tied up with domestic banks and other financial institutions.

The company will generate an additional 3,300 MW in 2009-10, but only about 2,000 MW of this will be available for commercial use this fiscal.

Outlay

The approved outlay towards capital expenditure for this fiscal is Rs. 24,525.80 crore for NTPC along with group subsidiaries, an increase of about 62 per cent from 2008-09.
