MUMBAI: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party Mayawati on Wednesday alleged that migrants to Mumbai were being given a step-motherly treatment.

Speaking at a poll rally here, she said she was aware of the issues in Maharashtra and that Marathi people had a lot of problems. People in the large number of slums in Mumbai were living a life worse than animals.

Slum dwellers were used for votes but forgotten after the elections, she said. Despite the Congress having been in power for over 50 years, nothing was done for the poor. Ms. Mayawati said Uttar Pradesh too had slums, but her government had done a lot to improve the conditions there.

She appealed to the people to vote her to power so that she could do for the country what she had done in her State.Ms. Mayawati was accompanied by all her candidates in Maharashtra. Braving the scorching sun, thousands had gathered on the Shivaji Park grounds since noon to hear her. “When Behenji comes, she will bring shade,” said party workers who were asked why the rally was being held on an open ground in summer. When the leader arrived around 5.45 p.m. to shouts of “Behen Kumari Mayawati,” after a meeting in Nagpur, the grounds were packed.

In her half-hour speech, she said her party was going it alone in all constituencies in Maharashtra. In distribution of ticket, she catered for all sections.

In Uttar Pradesh, there was rule of law and no repression. Ms Mayawati said that in her vision of an equitable society, even the upper castes had a role to play. “Sarva Jana Hitai, Sarva Jaja Sukhai is our motto.”
