KADAPA: Superintendent of Police D.S. Chauhan on Thursday ordered a crackdown on convoys of campaign vehicles and ordered seizure of vehicles moving with contestants or their kin without valid permission. The seized vehicles would not be released until completion of the election process, he told newsmen here. A special drive was ordered to curb unauthorised sale of liquor and avert drunken brawls. In all, 373 belt shops were closed down in the district besides seizure of liquor worth Rs. 35 lakh, including 50,000 bottles and 1,100 litres of ID arrack, he said. Cordon and search operations in villages and vehicle-checking led to recovery of 20 firearms, 46 bombs, 27 hunting sickles, 486 gelatine sticks, 11,890 detonators, 12 rounds of live ammunition, 24 packets of fuse wire, 20 bags of ammomium nitrate and Rs. 22 lakh worth of crackers, he said. Since notification, unaccounted cash of Rs. 39,79,250, 10 kg. of silver, 400 grams of gold and a two-wheeler were seized, the SP said. Police booked 11 cases of violation of model code and 21 cases on group clash incidents. Cases were booked against 109 persons in group clash incidents and of them 73 were arrested so far, Mr. Chauhan. The police are striving to make Kadapa a ‘bomb-free’ district, Mr. Chauhan said. Besides bomb-makers, those unauthorisedly supplying explosive materials, vehicles used to transport the contraband would be booked and dealt with sternly, he warned.
