Power connection: plea to relax conditions for residential buildings

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) has appealed to the State Government to relax the conditions relating to restrictions in providing electricity connections for residential buildings.

Secretary of CCC, K. Kathirmathiyon in a memorandum to the State Secretary to Government for Energy Department to clarify the condition in respect of residential buildings seeking electricity connection.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) had issued a notification on May 22, 2008, that a new service connection could be provided only if the intending consumer submitted application along with plan approval for construction and alteration of buildings, from the appropriate authorities.

The amendments were issued in line with the High Court order issued earlier.

In many of the cities and towns the available site might be sub-divided by the legal heirs into 2 or 3 cents and approval for those constructions were not possible.

The people who have constructed houses on such sites are finding it difficult to get new service connection. Since the construction of houses would no way affect the general public, CCC urged the Government to take up the matter with TNERC seeking exemption in respect of individual house connections (Tariff 1 a) only.

However, the flats should not be given exemption, since it was promoted for business purpose to earn profit out of it.
