Demand: People living on lands under the Urban Land Ceiling Act squatting near a temple in Singanallur on Thursday, demanding release of their property. — Coimbatore: Residents of Singanallur on Thursday picketed the Anjaneya temple in the area, accusing two of the trustees of demanding money for getting their lands released by the Government. According to office bearers of the Urban Land Ceiling Act Land Owners Association, two persons in charge of the affairs of the temple demanded Rs. 25 lakh from those in possession of the land and properties. The lands originally belonged to Sathyanarayana Rao and had sold it to a number of people on coming to know that the lands came under the purview of the Urban Land Ceiling Act. RevenueNow with the Government coming forward to clear the land and release the same to the owners, two people from Bangalore in-charge of the temple and administration of properties stating to be relatives of Sathyanarayana Rao said that they also had a share in the revenue out of these lands. They demanded that those seeking release of the land in their names should come together and compensate both of them to the tune of Rs. 25 lakh. The land owners said that they had to remit a huge sum to the Government for the release of the land besides a fee to the local body and pleaded helplessness in remitting such a huge sum. Those claiming rights over the land had allegedly threatened to move the court and turn the entire issue into a litigation to ensure that the land owners never got their properties released by the Government. The agitated residents picketed the temple to express their protest. The police held talks with the residents. Time soughtThose in charge of the temple administration had sought three days time for finalising terms.
