CHENNAI: The divergent views of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue will not affect the understanding between the two parties, Vaiko, MDMK general secretary, said on Thursday.

When pointed out that the AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa was for a solution within the framework of a united Sri Lanka, Mr. Vaiko told reporters that “they are entitled to have their views. We are entitled to our views.” Each party had its ideology. His party was not thrusting its views on others. He was addressing a press conference after participating in the party’s general council in the city.

Referring to resolutions adopted by the general council earlier in the day, Mr. Vaiko said the party had reiterated its position that the creation of a “sovereign, independent Tamil Eelam” was the “only solution” to the ethnic problem.

He wondered why Congress president Sonia Gandhi had not made a single statement about the plight of the Tamils in the last six months. Did she ever ask Manmohan Singh to make a formal request to the Sri Lankan government to stop the war?

Referring to the filing of a case against the MDMK functionary Nanjil Sampath under the National Security Act, he said there was no protection to democratic rights in the State.

Regarding questions on the alliance with the AIADMK for the Lok Sabha election, he said his party got the constituencies that it wanted.

The MDMK party manifesto would be released on April 17.

He would take part in a rally called by the AIADMK in the city on April 16, Mr. Vaiko said.
