Police beat me up: Dutt

Bareilly (U.P.): Terming anti-terror laws like the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) as “dangerous,” actor Sanjay Dutt on Thursday claimed that the police beat him up when he was in their custody to extract a confession to crimes under the Arms Act.

“TADA can break anyone”

“TADA is something which can break anyone...if you do not confess to the crime, they will make you sign on a confessional statement by bashing you up. The same happened with me,” Mr. Dutt told an election rally here.

He said laws like TADA and POTA were “dangerous things.”

“Bring that policeman to me. After bashing, I can make him confess that he [the cop] and not Osama [bin Laden] carried out strikes on New York’s Twin Towers,” he said.

The Samajwadi Party general secretary recalled how he was beaten by policemen for having a Muslim mother and a Hindu father.

Mr. Dutt was Samajwadi Party’s candidate for the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat, but the Supreme Court refused to grant him permission to contest the polls as he was convicted in a case related to the Mumbai blasts. — PTI
