‘Hits’ elude film stars in Chickaballapur

K.V. Subramanya

C.R. Manohara of Janata Dal (S) tries his luck

Shashi Kumar and Jayanthi contested and lost

‘Mukhyamantri’ Chandru elected MLA in 1985

CHICKABALLAPUR: Elections in Chickaballapur always have a touch of glamour. People from the tinsel world contesting elections, Parliament as well as State Assembly, is common in Chickaballapur.

All the film personalities, who tried their luck from Chickaballapur, were fielded by Janata Parivar parties and were not from the region.

Even in this election, the Chickaballapur Lok Sabha Constituency has a candidate from the film industry. The Janata Dal (Secular) has fielded filmmaker C.R. Manohara of Sarjapur. But he is not a popular film personality like some others who had contested from the Chickaballapur constituency in the past.

Mr. Manohara is the producer of Kannada flicks Orata I Love You and Janumada Gelathi.

In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, the Janata Dal (S) had given the ticket to popular hero Shashi Kumar, who was then a Chitradurga MP. Despite being an outsider to the constituency, Mr. Shashi Kumar gave a tough fight to Congress veteran R.L. Jalappa.

Veteran actor Jayanthi also tried her luck from Chickaballapur as a Lok Shakthi nominee in 1998 Parliament elections.

Although she garnered 2.04 lakh votes, she finished third after Mr. Jalappa of the Congress and C. Byre Gowda of the Janata Dal.

Luck again evaded Ms. Jayanthi when she contested the 1999 Assembly elections from Koratagere Assembly segment, which was part of the

Chickaballapur constituency prior to the delimitation.

The first film personality who entered the poll fray from Chickballapur Lok Sabha Constituency was “Mukyamanthri” Chandru.

He contested the 1989 elections as Janata Dal candidate and was defeated by a margin of over 1.30 lakh votes by V. Krishna Rao of the Congress.

Mr. Chandru was the first film artiste to make it to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

He was elected to the Assembly in 1985 from Gauribidanur Assembly segment, which is part of the Chickaballapur constituency.

Sai Kumar, popular South Indian film star, unsuccessfully contested the 2008 Assembly elections from Bagepalli in Chickballapur district.

Well known television serial director and playwright T.N. Seetharam lost the 1999 Assembly elections from his home turf Gauribidanur.
