A still from ‘Mrs. Ratcliffe Revolution’ Mrs. Ratcliffe’s Revolution (English) Cast: Catherine Tate, Iain Glen, Brittany Ashworth, Jessica Barden Director: Billie Eltringham A feel good comedy, Mrs. Ratcliffe’s Revolution is light, airy and a complete joy. It is 1968 in Yorkshire and the Ratcliffes are just about to have their lives turned upside down. The idealistic Frank Ratcliffe decides to move his family to East Germany in the hope of furthering the communist cause. His wife, Dorothy, the daughter of a great revolutionary (he fought in the Spanish Civil War) is willing to go along. While her stay-at-home brother finds a job as a janitor, her 12-year-old daughter Mary seems to adapt a bit too well to life behind the curtain. The same cannot be said about the other Ratcliffe girl, the teenaged Alex, who stirs up trouble in the neighbourhood with her rock ‘n’ roll music and fondness for Andy Warhol. Dorothy realises the revolution is not such a good thing after all and decides she needs to get her family out immediately. The actors are spot on and director Billie Eltringham reveals her keen sense of observation with her excellent feeling for detail. The clothes and music give a delightful look and feel of the swinging Sixties in this lovable spoof of life on either side of the Iron Curtain at a time when the Cold War was at its height.
