Encouraging response to Rahul’s meetings

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Contrasting with the lukewarm responses to his meetings in the State on Friday, there was mixed response to the public meetings of AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s public meetings at Birkur in Nizamabad district and in Godavari Khani on Saturday. His visit to Birkur enthused the Congress workers and leaders as it was more successful than their expectations.

People waited patiently for his arrival braving the scorching sun though he was an hour late. Crowds were seen running across the harvested agriculture fields to the venue even at the end of his speech that lasted just ten minutes. In his short address, he touched upon the good deeds of his party Governments at the Centre and in the State.

Congress leaders made elaborate arrangements for the meeting in the agricultural market yard grounds. Unlike previous meetings of Mr. Rahul in the State, the public meeting here had a good turnout. However, in Godavari Khani, Mr. Gandhi’s public meeting did not enthuse the party rank and file or pep up electioneering in the district. There was good turn out for the meeting as today was a holiday for Singareni employees, but the AICC leader’s soft and scholarly approach failed to ignite the campaign. In his ten-minute-long speech, he referred to the need to uplift the poor and attacked opposition parties for neglecting the issue of poverty but did not deal with State-level issues or those of Karimnagar district.

G. Venkat Swamy, Peddapalli MP urged Mr. Rahul Gandhi to talk about the heartbeat of Telangana people, but the latter did not oblige.
