Mr. Sharma files nomination after taking the blessings of the ‘Panj Pyaras’

Congress accused of plunging the nation into a crisis by not checking terrorism, price rise

NEW DELHI: As many as seven candidates, including BJP candidate for the North-East Delhi seat B. L. Sharma ‘Prem’, filed their nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections on Saturday as the electoral process for the seven seats from Delhi officially began with the notification of the polls.

Overall four candidates filed their papers for the North-East Delhi seat, while one candidate each filed their papers for the Chandni Chowk, New Delhi and North-West Delhi (reserved) seat. No nominations were filed for the remaining seats of South Delhi, West Delhi and East Delhi during the day.

Mr. Sharma filed his nomination at Nand Nagri after taking the blessings of “Panj Pyaras” and five Brahmins. He reached the office of the Returning Officer amid great fanfare accompanied by a large number of supporters.

Speaking on the occasion, he proclaimed that the end of the Congress-led regime is near. “On May 16, not only in Delhi but across the country the Congress culture would take a beating,” he said.

Accusing the Congress of plunging the nation into a crisis by not checking terrorism and price rise, the 79-year-old Mr. Sharma said that in Delhi too people were suffering due to the policies of the Congress Government. “Lakhs of parents are suffering due to the hike in fees imposed by the Delhi Government but the Chief Minister and the Education Minister are not even willing to listen to the cries of the people,” he charged.

Mr. Sharma was accompanied by his wife Krishna and daughters Sushma and Nivedita besides a large number of BJP leaders and workers including Delhi unit president O. P. Kohli.

Besides Mr. Sharma, his election in-charge for East Delhi and Ghonda MLA Sahab Singh Chauhan also filed his nomination from the seat as a covering candidate. Others who filed their papers from North-East Delhi were Manager Chaurasiya of Socialist Unity Centre of India and Independent Nafe Singh.

From New Delhi constituency, Maharaj Kumar of Desh Bhakt Party filed his nomination, while from North-West Delhi an Independent, Narender Pal Kashyap, was the first to follow the process.

By-election

Divya Jaiswal, the BJP candidate for the by-election to the Rohtas Nagar seat of the Delhi Assembly that fell vacant after the death of MLA Ram Babu Sharma, also filed his nomination along with a cover, Uma Gangwar, on Saturday. The election for this seat would take place along with the Lok Sabha polls.
