Easter celebrated in city

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The message of Easter – hope and reassurance, rent the air in the city as thousands of people thronged churches on Sunday to celebrate Jesus Christ’s resurrection.

Special holy mass was held in churches from early morning.

The ceremonies were interspersed with readings from the Holy Bible and popular Easter hymns and songs. Easter lilies adorned the altar in many churches. Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil led the mass at the St Mary’s Basilica, while Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil led the Easter ceremonies at the St Francis Assisi Cathedral. Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Karikkasery led the mass at Santa Cruz Basilica, Fort Kochi. Protestant, Orthodox, Jacobite and other Christian denominations too observed Easter in a big way. Easter eggs were given to devotees at the Immanuel CSI Church, Broadway. Easter Sunday is the culmination of week-long remembrance of the Passion, crucifixion and death and resurrection of Jesus, which began with Palm Sunday.
