Rajender under scanner Temporary vehicle check-posts set up CHENNAI: The police department has sought the help of legal experts and is collecting evidence for a case it registered recently in which Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko is charged with sedition. Speaking to The Hindu on Sunday, Commissioner of Police K. Radhakrishnan said the process of collecting evidence on Mr. Vaiko’s public speech was in progress and a legal opinion was being obtained. “Taking further action against him will be considered after that,” he added. The case against the MDMK leader has been registered under 13 (1) b of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act, 2004 (advocating, abetting, advising or inciting the commission of any unlawful activity) and also under Section 124 -A and Section 505 (1) (b) of the Indian Penal Code. Section 124-A relates to sedition (attempting to bring into hatred or contempt or exciting or attempting to excite disaffection towards the Government established by law in India). Section 505 (1) (b) relates to statements conducing to public mischief (making statement with intent to cause fear or alarm to the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquillity). Latchiya Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader and actor Vijaya. T. Rajender, who has been accused of sedition due to his recent pro-LTTE remarks, has also come under the police scanner. No case has been registered against him till now. Earlier Mr. Radhakrishnan told mediapersons that a storming operation was conducted under his direct surveillance on Saturday night as part of the security measures for the upcoming elections. A total of 232 police teams, headed by their respective joint commissioners and deputy commissioners, went around the city and launched a thorough search at many places, including 206 hotels and lodges and arrested 580 persons. Temporary vehicle checkposts were set up at 77 locations and 113 motorists were booked for drunken driving, the Commissioner added.
