THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An integrated transport infrastructure system comprising a ring road corridor, bus and truck terminals, parking lots, waterway, urban rail line for east-west connectivity and connectivity to major development projects is vital for the capital region, B.G. Sreedevi, Head, Highway Engineering Division, National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac), has said. In a paper presented at a seminar organised recently by the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority for the preparation of the second master plan for the city, Ms. Sreedevi stressed the need for a balanced road network by developing six radial corridors in a spider-web pattern. She proposed separate corridors linking highland areas and midland regions to streamline the traffic flow. The outer ring road linking Varkala to Poovar will pass through Kilimanoor, Palode, Vithura, Aryanad, Kattakada and Parassala. The radial system will bypass the congested Vattiyoorkavu, Peyad, Malayinkeezh, Kattakada, Kunnathukal and Aruvikkara junctions. Ms. Sreedevi said the Kazhakkuttam-Kaliyikkavila National Highway would have to be widened to accommodate six-lane traffic in another 10 years, while the Kovalam road would have to developed as a four-lane corridor in another five years. She pointed out that the public bus transport system would have to be augmented to meet 50 to 70 per cent of the demand.
