Udhagamandalam: The need to implement schemes, specifically for the welfare of persons belonging to the third gender has been emphasised by the Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam. In a letter sent to the Social Welfare Department on Monday, Secretary of the association G. Janardhanan said that though a few schemes have been evolved for them, they have not given up their habit of seeking alms from commercial establishments. Often they behaved in a regrettable manner with traders who refused to give them money. Social problemThe social welfare department should conduct monthly grievances redressal programmes for them. By viewing their plight as a social problem the government should extend a helping hand to them. They should be shown how to start self-employment ventures.
