Gulbarga
Always there: Noor Ahmed participating in a Congress procession in Gulbarga. GULBARGA: Noor Ahmed cycles to all public meetings addressed by senior Congress leaders. He can be seen in the front of all processions in a shirt in the party’s colours and carrying the party flag. This father of seven is a passionate Congressman, and he needs no invitation to attend public meetings addressed by leaders of the Congress. He never parts company with his old Hero bicycle, which he uses to travel from his home in the industrial township of Wadi in Chittapur taluk. “I am more comfortable with my bicycle, and I do not require any money to travel to Gulbarga city from my home town of Wadi,” says Mr. Ahmed. “Nobody asked me to come in this attire to public meetings or processions. I have chosen to wear this attire of which I am proud,” says the man, who walks with a limp because one leg is slightly shorter than the other. Mr. Ahmed was in the front of the procession organised by the local unit of the Congress when Congress candidate M. Mallikarjun Kharge came to Gulbarga to file his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections. He does not demand money for attending party functions and other events. According to District Congress Committee president Allamprabhu Patil, “Mr. Ahmed comes to public meetings and participates in processions on his own and never demands any money.” Mr. Ahmed says Congress leaders are generous. “They help me whenever I am in need of money to perform a marriage in my family or for any other emergency.” During elections Mr. Ahmed cycles to villages to campaign for the party. He remembers attending public meetings addressed by Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders in Gulbarga city and meeting Indira Gandhi in New Delhi.
