dated April 14, 1959: Apartheid in universities

The South African Parliament gave a second reading by 100 votes to 55, to the Government’s controversial University Segregation Bill, after a marathon sitting in Cape Town on April 11. The measure seeks to set up separate white and non-white university institutions in South Africa. The United Party’s opposition to the Bill during the long debate was based on the assertion that it would affect the autonomy of universities now admitting non-white students which in future would not be able to do so.
