This is reference to the running of heritage special of Southern Railway between Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai on April 5, run by steam loco to mark the 150th year of introduction of steam loco in India. The programme arranged by the railway is marvellous. Moreover, the overwhelming support from public is also appreciable. Many people who have seen the operation of steam loco only in film and paper might have been benefited through the running of heritage special. The programme is well conceived and thought provoking for the younger generations who gathered to witness the steam loco, raised various questions over the operation of the train. Really, the special amused the delta people. Hats off to the railway for the wonderful action. G. D. Inian, Mayiladuturai. Speed breakers neededThere is heavy traffic at Thippirajapuram village north street. All vehicles operated from the main road to neighbouring villages go through this road. In the evening, children play cricket on either sides of the roads. Hence, speed breakers should be established on this road. M. Parthasarathi, Thippirajapuram. Relief to road-usersConsumers of Thanjavur town thank the state government for providing Rs. 50 crore for restoring the town roads. This is a great relief to road-users. Though the actual execution may be after the elections, initial works could be commenced forth with, since the existing condition of city roads poses a hazard to vehicles and pedestrians R. J. B. Frederick, Thanjavur. Change spelling of nameI t would be appropriate to change the English spelling of ‘Villupuram’ to ‘Vizhuppuram’ to be in conformity with the trend, already prevailing, of changing the anglicised spelling. The railway administration and legislators may perhaps address the matter and bring about the change. G. Vedarajan, Thanjavur. Change shutdown timingAs a measure of tiding over the problem of power shortage in the state, the Thanjavur division of the TNEB has been resorting to power cuts daily for two hours. The timings of the scheduled power shutdown vary from area to area. The LIC Colony on Medical College Road faces power cut between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Through the timing doesn’t pose any difficulty to office-goers and students, most of those who remain indoors are senior citizens sweating it out during that period. The TNEB may consider changing the shutdown timing from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Vengarai S. Raman, Thanjavur. Set up farmers’ marketAdirampattinam is one of the fast-growing towns. It is encircled by a number of agricultural villages. Farmers have to visit the town everyday to market their produces. However, the farmers find it difficult to get reasonable prices for those commodities. Moreover, the prices of fruits and vegetables are higher here than that in other places. Hence, the State Government may consider establishing a full-fledged Uzhavar Santhai at Adirampattinam so that both the farming community and the people of the town would be benefited. A. Haja Abdul Khader, Adirampattinam. Women passengers’ hardshipI travelled by train No. 899 Tiruchi - Thanjavur passenger train on April 12 night. The train was fully crowded. I was shocked to see the compartment meant for women at the rear occupied by men. I request the railways to ensure that men do not travel in the women compartment. Abdal Parsa, Thanjavur.
