“Statement on Tamils issue made with an eye on votes”
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s statement that the Centre has been urging Colombo to stop war in Sri Lanka was made with an eye on getting votes during Lok Sabha elections and to please the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, an ally of the Congress, according to Bharatiya Janata Party State president L. Ganesan.
Addressing a press conference here, Mr.Ganesan contended that Mr.Chidambaram wanted to portray as if the Sri Lankan government’s announcement of a two-day halt to the war was done at the behest of the Union government.
The BJP leader said there was enough reason for Sri Lankan Tamils to apprehend about their safety if they moved to “no fire zone,” as they would be under the control of Sri Lankan troops. So, the United Nations should take responsibility for their safety and security.
