Satyam freshers in a fix

Yogendra Kalavalapalli

HYDERABAD: The news of Tech Mahindra emerging as the highest bidder for Satyam Computer Services Ltd. evoked a mixed response from Satyam recruits who got their offer letters way back in 2007. The fresh graduates, who have been waiting for the new suitor with bated breath ever since the Ramalinga Raju fiasco broke out, are now hoping to see light at the end of the tunnel. Welcoming the development, convenor of Satyam Freshers’ Union P. Varun said he felt happy that the company will now be in safe hands. “We are planning to write a request letter to them,” he said.

More than 6,000 recruits, who passed out of various colleges all over the country, were given offer letters by Satyam between October 2007 and May 2008. However, there was no communication from the company’s HR personnel regarding their date of joining the company. Representations to the company’s officials so far have not yielded any fruits. Although happy, some of them were sceptical about Monday’s developments. “Tech Mahindra has not yet given a date of joining to its fresh recruits who like us have an offer letter. Even among those taken in, many were sacked after conducting an internal test. What chances do we stand?” reasoned one fresher. Some even feel that L&T Infotech would have appealed to some of Satyam’s clients who were in manufacturing and product engineering sector. Others also point out that it would take time for things to settle down and by the time a decision regarding their status could be taken, it would be too late.
