CHENNAI: Winners Bakery and Confectionary, a joint venture of Chennai Corporation, Rotary Club of Madras East and Chennai Culinary Institute, is spreading its wings.

An outlet of the bakery is coming up on Santhome High Road.

The bakery, part of the Bhimannanpettai Corporation Community College on C. P. Ramaswamy Iyer Road, Alwarpet, provides free training to youngsters aged 16 - 25 from economically backward families.

Consultant to the bakery Geetha Krishnaraj said that during the six-month training, students who attended classes regularly were provided a stipend of Rs.1500 a month, food and uniform and laundry allowance. If required they are also given accommodation.

“The students are either absorbed in our unit or placed in jobs elsewhere. A beginner can earn Rs.4,000 a month after the course,” she added.

Chairman of the bakery and former president of the Rotary Club of Madras East S. S. Rajsekar said the products made by students were being supplied to many star hotels and private concerns.

“It was started at a non-functional noon meal centre. Mr. Mahadevan of Hot Breads suggested that students can be trained in confectionary and baking. He donated machinery worth Rs.20 lakh and various corporates helped us with the building. The Corporation gave us such a big space at an important location,” he said.

The unit was established in 2005 and has become viable now. Interested youngsters can join any time. For details contact 24982423.
