CHENNAI: ANUSAT, Anna University’s 50-kg micro satellite, designed and fabricated at the university will be launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation on April 20, its Vice-Chancellor P. Mannar Jawahar said here on Monday. The satellite is being sponsored by ISRO.

Dr. Jawahar, who was speaking at the Annual Day of the College of Engineering, Guindy (CEGC), lauded the faculties’ efforts in moulding the students and said the commitment of the industry had helped the university offer more courses.

Cognizant Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer S. Madhavan, who gave away awards to meritorious students, urged them to equip themselves with the skills they would need when they entered the industry. The global recession should not deter young engineering graduates for it would not last long as economic cycles followed a certain pattern. He recalled that in 1966 when he graduated from the College of Engineering, the country faced an economic crisis. “We decided to specialise and educate ourselves. Some fostered the seeds of entrepreneurship. The current economic downtrend is not and will not be for a long time. Among the economies of the world India has weathered well,” he said.

The information technology sector had “grabbed all graduates” anticipating growth, irrespective of the candidates’ skills leaving other industries with no candidates to recruit.

Budding engineers should keep abreast of engineering skills and be versatile by participating in professional societies and taking up certificate programmes. With more companies “shifting design activities to India, it requires our engineers to be good at design technology. The expectation of the industry is now different. They expect you to have a higher set of industry-specific skills.”

Communication, problem solving, analytical ability, intellectual honesty, high ethical values, team work, innovative thinking and capability to understand and apply emerging technologies were all needed, he explained.

P. Shahabudeen, head of the Department of Industrial Engineering, listed the various activities of the college in collaboration with the industry. CEGC Dean M. Sekar, Student Advisor, S. Muttan and President of Student Union, P. Kalaiarasan spoke. A total of 77 students graduated in 2008-09 from the college.
