Madhavan Nair, Abhinav Bhindra receive Padma awards

NEW DELHI: Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman G. Madhavan Nair, involved in the first Chandrayaan mission; noted environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna, Olympic Gold medal winner Abhinav Bhindra, actors Vivek and Tilakan and eminent Carnatic musician Aruna Sairam were among the 63 personalities who were presented the Padma awards 2009 by President Pratibha Patil here on Tuesday. (The first batch of awardees were presented with the awards on March 31.)


The President presented the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civilian award, to four distinguished personalities, the Padma Bhushan to 14 and the Padma Shri awards to 45. The awards were presented at a special civil investiture ceremony at the Ashoka Hall in Rashtrapathi Bhavan and every recipient was greeted with repeated rounds of applause.

The glittering function was attended, among others, by Vice-President M. Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and Home Minister P. Chidambaram. Cricketers M.S. Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh, Padma Shri winners, were not present.

The Padma Vibhushan awardees include Prof. D. P. Chattopadhyaya, Literature & Education and Dr. Purshotam Lal, Medicine.


Shekhar Gupta, Journalism; Dr. (Smt) Isher Judge Ahluwalia, Literature & Education; Ramachandra Guha, Literature & Education; Conjeevaram Srirangachari Seshadri, Science & Engineering; Dr. Gurdip Singh Randhawa, Science & Engineering; Dr. Naganath Nayakawadi, Social Work and Dr. (Smt.) Sarojini Varadappan, Social Work received Padma Bhushan awards.

Hemi Bawa, Art ; Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Art; Dr. Leela Omchery, Art; Dr. Subrahmanyam Krishnaswamy, Art; Udit Narayan, Art; Ameen Sayani, Commentary & Broadcasting; Prof. Thanikachalam Sadagopan, Medicine; Pankaj Advani, Sports; Arumugam Sakthivel, Trade & Industry; Rev. Fr. Joseph Hilary Pereira (rehabilitation of HIV/AIDS patients) and Dr. R. Sivaraman (medicine).
