Bhopal: The Congress on Tuesday called a bandh in Madhya Pradesh to protest the murder of its MLA Makan Lal Jatav, who was gunned down by unidentified men while engaged in campaigning, and demanded a CBI or judicial probe into it. Gohad MLA Jatav was shot dead by unidentified assailants during electioneering in Bhind on Monday. Markets in Bhind and Datia towns of the remained closed following the bandh call. “We want a CBI or judicial inquiry into Mr. Jatav’s killing to bring truth to the fore,” AICC observer for Madhya Pradesh Harkesh Bahadur told reporters at the party’s office here. He said some days back the deceased had a dispute with the former BJP MLA Lal Singh Arya after which the latter allegedly threatened him. He alleged the police have not registered a FIR due to the State government’s pressure. Not registering a case in the MLA’s killing speaks of the fact that the government was trying to weaken the case and protect the culprits, he said. “When the MLA is not safe in the state, how can a common man be safe in M.P.?” he remarked. Terming the killing of Mr. Jatav, as “unfortunate” Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that violence should not have any place in politics. “I am deeply pained with the incident. Violence should not have any place in politics and this is an unfortunate incident,” Mr. Chauhan told reporters after garlanding the bust of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar here. He said that an inquiry will be conducted into the incident and stern action will be taken against the accused persons. PTI
