New bus services to rural areas invite ire of opposition parties

L. Srikrishna

MADURAI: Members of Opposition parties here have charged the DMK functionaries and the police of violating election norms in Madurai Lok Sabha constituency.

They said that the TNSTC (Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Madurai Division) authorities had been ‘directed’ to operate new bus services between Periyar Bus Stand and different destinations in and around Melur since Monday.

To name a few, buses have started plying from Periyar Bus Stand to Arumbanoor, Keezha Kallandiri and Kuruthur, among other routes. “We have lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India in this regard to take action,” Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretary V. Sundaram said.

After a similar complaint was lodged with the Election Commission during the Tirumangalam by-poll, Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta enquired with the TNSTC, Madurai Division, an officer said.

Besides, some private buses operating between Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand and destinations in southern districts such as Rajapalayam and Virudhunagar had started entering Madurai city to drop passengers at Periyar Bus Stand, while government operated buses were told to take the ring road, sources alleged.

Similarly, the police had been told not to stop the private mofussil buses entering the city or take action against the operators, the members alleged. The TNSTC authorities have been instructed not to lodge complaints with the police against erring mini bus and share auto operators who indulged in route violations is another allegation from the Opposition parties.

When contacted, an officer in the Transport Department, Chennai, maintained that the TNSTC, Madurai Division, had only extended its services to some interior pockets following representations from commuters.
